For example, the command xvfb-run texmacs -convert article.tm article.pdf -quit It is possible to use TeXmacs as a batch processor (which is LaTeX's usual operation mode), using X virtual framebuffer to avoid opening unwanted windows while processing. TeXmacs also features a presentation mode and there are plans to evolve towards a complete scientific office suite with spreadsheet capacities and a technical drawing editor. Along with the Cygwin version, a native beta port is available for Microsoft Windows. TeXmacs currently runs on most Unix-based architectures including Linux, FreeBSD, Cygwin and Mac OS X. Support for HTML, MathML and XML is under development. TeXmacs is not a front-end to LaTeX but TeXmacs documents can be converted to either TeX or LaTeX. The goal of TeXmacs is to provide a WYSIWYG editor that nevertheless makes it possible to write correctly structured documents with aesthetically pleasing typesetting results. Like many WYSIWYG editors (such as Microsoft Word), authors manipulate a document on screen which should print to a similar looking paper copy. TeXmacs also supports a Scheme extension language called Guile for customizing the program and writing extensions. I’m pretty sure something more intuitive could be built, something like the developer tools of chrome would already help.TeXmacs can handle mathematical formulas and is used as a front-end to a number of computer algebra systems such as Maxima and Sage. What I think still remains to be solved is the topping to create new templates, right now it is a bit like working with raw css/html. If latex notation is so good why then nobody uses it to write math on a blackboard? :) Texmacs (and lyx ) really bring something new to the table. There is no arguing about the fact that latex is better than word for any serious writing and that the output is normally beautiful (if one chooses the right style, probably CV are the common exception) but the input method (let alone the conglomerate of tools/libraries around it) can be greatly improved. I had to split it in multiple files because at the type it would be very slow on very long and complex document but apart from that the result looked very nice.Īs an aside, and this is just personal opinion, I always felt the love of latex in the scientific community is some sort of Stockholm syndrome. My handwriting is pretty bad so I actually preferred that to using a physical notebook.įinally I did the typesetting of my whole PhD thesis with it. I was also using the software to do my own derivations. The wysiwym display is also critical to check for transcription mistakes in real time. It is possible to type extremely fast with it and thanks to copy/paste/modify you can actually go faster than the lecturer. Just as a data point, I used to take notes in class with this software (essentially blackboard after blackboard of math expressions).
